A long walk

Not having the car, and needing to pick up the phone that Orange insist I get with my new contact, even though I’m never going to use it (unless something really horrible happens to my N95), I went for a walk today to the parcel depot.

It’s one of the many I’ve been to over the last few years; up near the John Charles Centre for Sport and, co-incidentally, around the corner from 168 (City of Leeds) Squadron.

By my watch, it took me less time to get there than it does to drive to Huddersfield. Bizarre.

Waiting for Mister Moonlight

How fab are The Blow Monkeys?

Over 18 years since their last studio album was released, and they’re back. And playing a few, small gigs to promote the new one, including last night at The Leadmill in Sheffield, which is where I was with Chris & Sam.

Totally outstanding from start to finish, lots of singles, an album track or two for the devotees and some of the new ones to boot. And two encores, which seemed to catch a few people out.

A week away…

Camp tomorrow! My first-ever Summer Camp, this one’s at RAF Marham. I have no idea what to expect, though the two tame Squadron Leaders of my acquaintance have done their best to scare me.

I won’t be able to make any posts from there though, it sounds like a bit of an IT wilderness! Not even sure if I’ll get a mobile phone signal.

How to confuse the Chartered Institute of Public Relations

Last week, I sent in a PRide Award entry on behalf of Metro. I also sent one in for the Ladies.

The CIPR couldn’t cope with me working for Metro *and* for the Ladies. True.

Just as well I didn’t put one in for ‘The Largest Room in the House’, as planned!

I collect stationery

I don’t mean that in a trainspotterish sort of way – I just seem to collect it. Every time I think “Oooh, must start making notes of the things I keep forgetting”, I go out and buy a notebook, even though I have a cellar full of BOGOFs and ‘threefers’.

And it’s not just notebooks. There’s reams of printer paper, folders, dividers, tags, clips, pins,…

Sometimes it comes in handy, just when you least expect it. And, at other times, it’s just embarrassing and in the way.

Today is…

“Why, what’s the matter?”

Is anything the matter?”

“You seem so sad, Eeyore.”

“Sad? Why should I be sad? It’s my birthday, The happiest day of the year.”

“Your birthday?” said Pooh in great surprise.

On. Or off.

Those who know me quite well (or who have observed me close-up) know that I’m generally on or off. No half-measures.

One of the drawbacks is that, even though last night’s Leeds United Ladies Fundraising Masquerade Ball was really rather good (and, one hopes, quite successful), I still couldn’t switch off and enjoy it for what it was. I felt so much happier being on my feet, wandering around, pointing the photographer to the right people, asking how the students were doing, and so on. Being a nuisance, basically!

When is a holiday not a holiday?

Today is Labour Day in Canada (and the US, but they nicked the idea from Oop North). As such, everything is shut; malls, coffee-houses, you name it and you can’t buy it (well, not easily).

If this was a UK Bank Holiday (like last week), we’d all be at Meadowhall or B&Q. And I’d be writing my postcards, drinking coffee and buying cheap electronic accessories.

Best advice? Or worst?

Gary says… WTF?

Race for Life

Or backache for life! Day one of this weekend’s races in Huddersfield, and we were woefully short-handed in the Finish Funnel. But the band of cadets worked heroically, augmented by random people coming in to help when they could. The trouble (for me) was that I had to keep reaching down to my left to […]
